Sickle cell
Sickle cell disease is a genetic disorder that affects how red blood cells develop, potentially causing episodes of pain, anaemia and an increased risk of serious infections. Those with the condition inherit it at birth, but it can only be passed on when both parents carry the sickle cell gene.
